The Trump administration has proposed a significant reduction in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) budget, aiming to cut approximately $40 billion—about one-third of its discretionary spending—for fiscal year 2026. This proposal, detailed in a draft budget document, would decrease the department’s discretionary budget from $121 billion in 2024 to around $81 billion in 2026.

The Trump administration’s proposed $40 billion cut to the health budget includes eliminating public health programs focused on chronic disease, rural care, and early education. It also plans a major agency restructuring by consolidating several branches under a new body, the “Administration for a Healthy America,” affecting agencies like National Institutes of Health (NIH) , Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Food and Drug Administration( FDA). Additionally, around 20,000 HHS employees have already been laid off or taken buyouts amid broader downsizing efforts.

While these proposed cuts are part of a broader effort to streamline federal health agencies and balance the federal budget, they have raised concerns among public health advocates about potential impacts on healthcare access and services. It’s important to note that these proposals are preliminary and would require Congressional approval to be enacted.
