The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has stated that there is currently no plan to set up a new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. The clarification was issued in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

Responding to a question raised by Dr. Laxmikant Bajpayee, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav said that under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), 22 AIIMS have been approved across the country so far, including two in Uttar Pradesh-Raebareli and Gorakhpur. Both institutes are fully functional.

Dr. Bajpayee had asked whether the government acknowledges the need for an AIIMS in Meerut, considering its importance as a major centre in western Uttar Pradesh, its growing population, and its strong connectivity with neighbouring districts and states. He also sought to know whether setting up an AIIMS in Meerut would help ease the patient load on AIIMS, New Delhi, and meet the increasing demand for super-specialty healthcare services in the region. He further inquired whether the government intends to prioritise the establishment of an AIIMS in Meerut.

In response, Jadhav reiterated that there is no proposal to establish an AIIMS in Meerut under PMSSY.

However, the Centre has taken steps to strengthen advanced healthcare facilities in the region. The Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial (LLR) Medical College in Meerut is being upgraded through a Centre–State cost-sharing arrangement. The project includes the construction of a 200-bed super-speciality block comprising eight departments: Cardiology, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS), Pediatric Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Nephrology, Burn and Reconstruction Surgery, and Radiotherapy.

The government clarified that while efforts are underway to enhance super-speciality services in Meerut, there is no approved proposal at present for setting up a new AIIMS in the city.
