The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the licence of the nurses’ mess at Mumbai’s civic-run Nair Hospital with immediate effect after an inspection found serious food safety and hygiene violations.
The inspection was carried out on September 12. According to the FDA, the deficiencies raised concerns over food safety, particularly given the hospital’s large movement of patients, staff and visitors. The department has initiated further legal action.
The affected facility is one of three food outlets operating at Nair Hospital. Hospital Dean Shailesh Mohite said the nurses’ mess prepared meals for around 400 nurses working and studying at the hospital. The other two canteens, including the one serving patients and another catering to relatives, doctors and staff, remain operational.
The hospital has made alternative arrangements for meals for the nurses following the closure. It also plans to implement the corrective measures recommended by the FDA.
Mohite said the hospital had not yet been informed of the specific deficiencies identified during the FDA inspection.
