Keralam is likely to get an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the near future, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan said while highlighting the expansion of medical education and healthcare infrastructure under the Viksit Bharat vision.
He said the growing use of artificial intelligence, robotics, digital healthcare, advanced imaging and precision medicine is transforming medical practice, but stressed that these technologies should complement doctors rather than replace the human element of healthcare.
“A machine can analyse. A robot can assist. An algorithm can identify patterns. But a patient still needs a doctor who can listen, understand, reassure and take responsibility,” Radhakrishnan said.
His remarks come amid ongoing discussions over the establishment of an AIIMS in Keralam. In March 2026, the Kerala High Court sought an explanation from the Centre on the criteria used to select states for setting up AIIMS under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).
The Centre had informed the court that 22 new AIIMS were being established across states and Union Territories, of which 18 were functional and four were at different stages of construction at the time.
Radhakrishnan made the remarks while addressing an event in Thiruvananthapuram, Keralam.
