India has stepped up its humanitarian response to the devastating floods in Nepal, sending another 21.5 tonnes of relief supplies, including medical equipment and forensic kits. The sixth and seventh Indian relief flights reached Kathmandu on the night of September 4, providing additional support for rescue, recovery and relief operations in the flood-affected areas.
Both C-130J aircraft carrying the consignments landed in Kathmandu, where the relief material was formally handed over to Nepal’s Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Mahabir Pun.
Medical Supplies and Forensic Kits Included
The latest consignments include essential medical supplies and forensic equipment to assist authorities involved in rescue and identification efforts. Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava said the assistance forms part of India’s continued support for Nepal’s response to the Rasuwa flash floods.
The supplies are expected to strengthen ongoing relief operations and support communities severely affected by the disaster.
India’s Relief Mission Began on August 26
India’s assistance to Nepal began soon after the devastating flash floods struck the country. The first relief aircraft arrived on August 26 carrying 10 tonnes of supplies, including temporary shelters, blankets, hygiene kits, solar lamps and medicines.
A second aircraft reached Nepal on August 27 with 37.5 tonnes of relief material, comprising tents, blankets, hygiene kits, solar lamps, dewatering pumps, kitchen sets, generators, medicines and food items. A subsequent consignment added another 10 tonnes of assistance.
Rescue and Forensic Support Expanded
On August 30, India’s fourth relief flight delivered 11 tonnes of assistance, along with specialised search-and-rescue equipment. The flight also carried a technical team and forensic experts tasked with supporting DNA-based identification efforts.
On September 2, India sent its fifth aircraft carrying an 11-member rescue team, specialised equipment and 5.5 tonnes of essential medicines.
Nepal Continues to Battle Heavy Losses
The latest Indian assistance comes as Nepal continues to deal with the widespread devastation caused by the Rasuwa floods. According to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, the death toll had reached 1,259 as of 7 p.m. Sept 04.
Chitwan reported the highest number of recovered bodies at 355, including unidentified remains. Nawalparasi East reported 218, Nawalparasi West 212, Nuwakot 177, Rasuwa 127, Gorkha 72, Dhading 60 and Tanahun 38.
India’s continued deployment of relief material, medical supplies, rescue personnel and forensic expertise is aimed at supporting Nepal’s emergency response and recovery efforts during the ongoing crisis.
