Cipla Limited has announced the appointment of Achin Gupta, currently its Global Chief Operating Officer (GCOO), as the company’s next Managing Director (MD) and Global Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), effective April 1, 2026, for a five-year term. His appointment will be subject to shareholder approval. Until then, he will serve as MD & GCEO Designate starting January 1, 2026.
Gupta will take over from Umang Vohra, who has led Cipla as MD & GCEO since 2016. Vohra joined the company in 2015 as Global Chief Financial & Strategy Officer before assuming the top leadership role.
Having joined Cipla in 2021 as CEO of the One India business, Gupta has played a key role in strengthening Cipla’s market presence and operational efficiency. In February 2025, he was elevated to Global COO, overseeing commercial markets, APIs, manufacturing, and supply chain functions. Under his leadership, the India business achieved market-leading growth, modernized its operations, enhanced profitability, and expanded into chronic therapies and underpenetrated markets. He also spearheaded strategic global partnerships that positioned Cipla as a trusted, innovation-led partner.
Prior to joining Cipla, Gupta held leadership roles at Glenmark Pharmaceuticals and Abbott Laboratories. He holds an M.Tech in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology from IIT Delhi and an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad. With over 20 years of experience, he is widely recognized for his entrepreneurial leadership and focus on innovation, accountability, and purpose-driven growth.
