The Bihar government has announced a complete ban on private practice by doctors working in government hospitals. The decision was notified by the state Health Department.

According to the official notification, the move is part of the state’s flagship programme ‘Saat Nischay-3’ for the 2025-30 period. Under the initiative’s resolution titled “accessible health, secure life,” the government has decided to bar its doctors from engaging in private medical practice.

The department also stated that separate guidelines will be issued regarding compensation for affected doctors through a non-practising allowance (NPA), subject to approval by the competent authority.

The new rule will apply to all government doctors as well as faculty members in state-run hospitals.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had earlier hinted at the introduction of such a policy. Speaking during his ‘Samriddhi Yatra’ in West Champaran district in January, he had said the government was working on a new framework to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and restrict private practice by government doctors.
