All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi announced that its College of Nursing alumna, Nisha Mehta, has been appointed as the Health Minister of Nepal, calling it a proud moment for the institution and the nursing fraternity.

In an official statement, AIIMS highlighted that Mehta’s transition from clinical nursing to a key policymaking role reflects the growing leadership opportunities within the nursing profession. During her time at the institute, she was known for her strong leadership skills, active involvement in academics and extracurricular activities, and a deep sense of responsibility qualities that have contributed to her rise in public service.

The institute noted that her achievement underscores the critical role nurses can play not just in patient care but also in shaping healthcare systems and policies at national and global levels. AIIMS extended its best wishes for her tenure and expressed confidence in her potential contributions to public health in Nepal.

Mehta completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from AIIMS between 2006 and 2010 and was sworn in as Health Minister on March 27.

Her appointment comes after the Rastriya Swatantra Party secured a sweeping victory in the March 5 elections, winning 182 out of 275 seats in the House of Representatives and forming a majority government. This marks Nepal’s first democratically elected government since the previous coalition led by K P Sharma Oli was removed in September amid widespread youth-led protests over corruption, nepotism, and a controversial social media ban.
