Zydus Lifesciences on Tuesday (Feb 17) announced the launch of a new medical device aimed at improving airway clearance and breathing support for patients suffering from chronic respiratory illnesses such as COPD, asthma, and bronchiectasis.

The company has introduced PEPAIR, described as India’s first affordable Oscillating Positive Expiratory Pressure (OPEP) device, according to an official statement. The launch comes at a time when more than 90 lakh people in the country are estimated to be living with long-term respiratory conditions.

Chronic mucus hypersecretion remains a common and persistent issue among these patients, often requiring daily airway clearance therapy as part of routine care. PEPAIR is designed to address this need through a drug-free, handheld mechanism.

The device has been launched under an agreement with AeroDel Technology Innovations, a domestic medical device firm specialising in inhalation technology, drug delivery, and pulmonary rehabilitation solutions.

Commenting on the launch, Zydus Lifesciences Managing Director Sharvil Patel said the device offers a simple and accessible solution to support better breathing outcomes for patients with chronic lung conditions.

OPEP therapy works through a small handheld, translucent device that generates oscillating pressure and vibrations during exhalation. These vibrations help loosen mucus, keep airways open, and promote effective clearance.

The company highlighted that respiratory diseases in India are rising due to multiple factors, including persistent air pollution, climate-related changes affecting allergens and ozone levels, rapid urbanisation, and delayed diagnosis of chronic lung disorders.
