WHO Applauds India for Backing Historic Pandemic Accord

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has expressed his gratitude to India for its strong support and commitment to the landmark Pandemic Accord. After three years of discussions, the agreement was adopted by consensus at the 78th World Health Assembly (WHA), marking a significant step in global pandemic preparedness.

In a message shared on social media platform X, Dr. Tedros acknowledged India’s contribution, stating, “Namaste, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for virtually joining the historic 78th WHA during the adoption of the Pandemic Accord. We deeply appreciate India’s commitment and support to the WHO.”

Prime Minister Modi addressed the Assembly through videoconferencing, emphasizing the importance of the agreement. “The WHO Pandemic Treaty represents a collective pledge to enhance global collaboration in tackling future pandemics,” he said. The Prime Minister also congratulated all stakeholders on successfully finalizing the accord and reiterated India’s readiness to share its experience and best practices particularly with developing nations and the Global South.

The Pandemic Accord aims to strengthen international cooperation in responding to future global health emergencies, with India playing a proactive role in shaping and supporting this global initiative.
