UP CM Yogi Adityanath announced on July 2 that the state government will set up a 100-bed AYUSH health and wellness centre in each district of the state. This move follows the inauguration of Uttar Pradesh’s first dedicated AYUSH University, the Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath AYUSH University, in Gorakhpur.
These wellness centres will provide treatments from India’s traditional medical systems, including therapies like Panchakarma and Ksharasutra. Additionally, to strengthen AYUSH education, the state plans to open AYUSH colleges in each of the six divisional headquarters where such institutions do not yet exist.
Addressing the inaugural event of the university, CM Yogi welcomed President Droupadi Murmu and Governor Anandiben Patel, emphasizing that both the central and state governments are committed to promoting holistic healthcare for all citizens.
Highlighting the progress made since 2014, Yogi noted that traditional Indian medicine systems, which had little global recognition before, gained prominence after Prime Minister Narendra Modi established the Ministry of AYUSH. This ministry unified Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, Homeopathy, and Naturopathy under one umbrella, giving them national and international visibility.
He explained that Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath AYUSH University is a product of the Prime Minister’s vision of holistic wellness. The university, now open for admissions, will offer educational programs and healthcare services across multiple AYUSH disciplines, along with serving as a hub for research and innovation in traditional medicine.
CM Yogi also highlighted the university’s role in creating job opportunities for young people and farmers. By encouraging the cultivation of medicinal plants, the university is expected to provide farmers with new income streams. Furthermore, the institution aims to promote health tourism, making UP a future destination for those seeking traditional wellness therapies.
He expressed optimism that the university would become a leading centre for health tourism in the coming years. Yogi also spoke about the historic roots of Ayurveda within the Nath tradition, pointing out that disciplines like Rasashastra (alchemy and metallurgical sciences) were systematically developed by Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath, drawing on the ancient wisdom of the Navnath saints and the 84 Siddhas.
