Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak has urged the National Medical Commission (NMC) to increase the number of postgraduate (PG) medical seats in the state while emphasizing strict compliance with NMC norms.
Pathak, who also oversees the medical education department, instructed officials to not only meet the mandated faculty norms but also to conduct interviews to recruit highly qualified teaching staff for medical colleges. Currently, Uttar Pradesh has 1,871 PG seats in government institutions and 2,100 seats in private colleges.
In a move to enhance oversight and accountability, Pathak announced that principals of government medical colleges must conduct daily rounds of their campuses and upload photographic proof. According to an official directive from Principal Secretary Partha Sarthi Sen Sharma, these rounds will help ensure that patient care services and teaching activities are functioning smoothly. If a principal is unavailable, a deputy will take over the responsibility.
To address maintenance issues promptly, staff from the engineering and upkeep departments will accompany college heads during these rounds. The Deputy CM also said ex-servicemen would be deployed around sensitive areas such as girls’ hostels and emergency departments to strengthen campus security.
CCTV surveillance will be expanded, with real-time video feeds made accessible to principals and senior officials through mobile devices for better monitoring.
Pathak also directed health officials to ensure that emergency departments are adequately staffed with doctors and paramedics. He stressed the importance of providing patients with nutritious food and maintaining hygienic conditions in hospitals. He further advised leveraging the Ayushman Bharat scheme to support patient welfare and ensure a clean and safe environment for their treatment.
