The Uttar Pradesh government has intensified its crackdown on hospitals violating norms under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, with 866 empanelled hospitals facing action between 2020 and 2026 for alleged treatment negligence, non-compliance and financial irregularities. The action has included de-empanelment, suspension, withdrawal of specialties and financial penalties.
648 Hospitals Removed From Ayushman Panel
According to an official statement issued on August 19, the State Agency for Comprehensive Health and Integrated Services (SACHIS) has de-empanelled 648 hospitals, while 61 hospitals have been suspended. Specific specialties have also been withdrawn from 17 hospitals.
Financial penalties exceeding Rs 8.53 crore have been imposed on 140 hospitals during the last two financial years, with more than Rs 4.37 crore recovered so far.
318 Hospitals Face Action in 2026
SACHIS CEO Archana Verma said 318 hospitals have faced action in 2026 so far. Among them, 242 hospitals were removed from the empanelled list for failing to meet 35 indicators prescribed by the Centre, while 61 were suspended. Specific specialties were also de-empanelled at 15 hospitals.
The scale of action has increased sharply compared with previous years, with 203 hospitals facing action in 2023 and 27 in 2024.
Penalties Cross Rs 5 Crore in 2026-27
During 2025-26, penalties of more than Rs 3.45 crore were imposed on 60 hospitals, of which Rs 3.19 crore has already been recovered.
In 2026-27 so far, authorities have imposed penalties exceeding Rs 5.07 crore on 80 hospitals, recovering more than Rs 1.17 crore.
Data Analytics Used to Detect Irregularities
The State Anti-Fraud Unit is using data analytics to identify suspicious patterns and possible violations. These include repeated admissions of the same patient, identical medical reports being submitted, showing out-patients as in-patients and other irregularities in treatment and billing.
Authorities are also monitoring compliance with prescribed quality and service standards.
Suspension Possible After Penalties
SACHIS CEO Archana Verma said hospitals that continue to violate prescribed standards even after financial penalties could face suspension.
The government said the measures are being implemented under the directions of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, with the objective of ensuring quality treatment and preventing misuse of the Ayushman Bharat scheme for beneficiaries across Uttar Pradesh.
