The Uttar Pradesh government has begun a Mass Drug Administration (MDA) campaign in 195 blocks across 27 districts to eradicate filariasis by 2027 started from August 10. The drive brings together the Health Department with Education, Panchayati Raj, Rural Livelihood Mission and Food & Civil Supplies departments to ensure maximum public participation.
Over 35,483 drug administrators and 7,096 supervisors are on the ground, supported by 390 rapid response teams. Women from self-help groups, schools and ration shops are being used to spread awareness and encourage people to take the preventive medicine.
Filariasis, caused by bites from infected Culex mosquitoes, can cause swelling and other serious symptoms years after infection. While there is no cure, taking the prescribed medication annually for five years can prevent the disease.
