Torrent Group has entered India’s hospital healthcare sector with plans to develop a 500-plus bed multispecialty hospital in Ahmedabad, marking a major expansion of its healthcare ambitions beyond pharmaceuticals and diagnostics. The project underscores the growing interest of large Indian conglomerates in capital-intensive hospital infrastructure as demand for comprehensive healthcare services continues to rise post-Covid.

According to project filings, the hospital will be developed by Torrent Hospitals Private Limited, a group subsidiary, along the SP Ring Road, an area fast emerging as a healthcare and residential growth corridor in the city. Torrent plans to invest over ₹750 crore in the project. The facility will be built on a 13,896 sq metre plot, acquired in mid-2025 for ₹247 crore, with a proposed built-up area of nearly 95,814 sq metres, making it one of Ahmedabad’s larger private hospital developments. Once operational, the hospital is expected to generate at least 2,400 direct and indirect jobs.

The move builds on Torrent’s healthcare push following the launch of Torrent Diagnostics in 2022, and signals its formal entry into end-to-end healthcare delivery, spanning pharmaceutical manufacturing, diagnostics and tertiary hospital care. Industry observers view this as part of a broader shift towards vertically integrated healthcare models, aimed at improving patient retention, care continuity and operational efficiencies.

Torrent’s hospital foray comes amid a post-pandemic expansion of hospital capacity in Ahmedabad, driven largely by corporate healthcare players. In recent years, CIMS Hospital was acquired by Marengo Asia Healthcare, HCG expanded its cancer care footprint, while Adani Group and Zydus Hospitals have also announced large-scale hospital projects in the city. The concentration of new investments along the SP Ring Road reflects changing urban dynamics, with better connectivity, availability of large land parcels and proximity to new residential clusters making the corridor attractive for large hospitals.

Unlike earlier expansion cycles, recent hospital projects are being planned with higher bed capacities from inception, indicating expectations of sustained patient inflows. Industry executives attribute the growing demand for large multispecialty hospitals to rising health insurance penetration, increasing disposable incomes, medical tourism inflows, and a growing preference for integrated, single-campus care.

Statutory and zoning approvals for Torrent’s project are currently underway. Once completed, the hospital is expected to further intensify competition in Ahmedabad’s private healthcare market, while reinforcing the city’s position as one of western India’s key hubs for advanced, corporate-led healthcare delivery.
