The Technology Development Board (TDB), under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, has signed an agreement with Karnataka-based Panacea Medical Technologies Pvt. Ltd. to support the development and commercialisation of an indigenous 32-slice Computed Tomography (CT) scanner.
Announced on October 15, 2026, the collaboration is part of the government’s efforts to strengthen domestic medical device manufacturing under the Make in India initiative and reduce reliance on imported diagnostic imaging equipment.
Project to Focus on Advanced Diagnostic Imaging
Panacea Medical Technologies, headquartered in Malur, Karnataka, specialises in radiotherapy and radiology equipment. The company plans to expand its diagnostic imaging portfolio through the development of the 32-slice CT scanner.
The proposed system will be designed for diagnostic applications across multiple clinical specialties. CT technology uses rotating X-ray equipment and digital detectors to produce cross-sectional images of internal organs and tissues, supporting the diagnosis and assessment of various medical conditions.
Developing the scanner will involve precision engineering, integration of imaging components, software development and calibration to meet imaging performance and patient safety requirements.
Government Support for Domestic Manufacturing
The initiative comes amid increasing demand for advanced diagnostic imaging equipment in India, supported by healthcare infrastructure expansion and the growing need for early disease detection.
Through the agreement, TDB aims to encourage domestic innovation in high-end medical technologies and strengthen India’s medical equipment manufacturing ecosystem.
Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary, TDB, said the project aligns with the government’s objective of developing indigenous medical technologies capable of meeting domestic healthcare requirements while creating opportunities in international markets.
A promoter of Panacea Medical Technologies expressed appreciation for TDB’s support, stating that the collaboration would accelerate the company’s efforts to develop indigenous diagnostic imaging solutions and improve access to advanced CT technology across India.
The project remains in the development and commercialisation stage. The announcement does not confirm completion of product validation, regulatory approvals or commercial deployment of the proposed scanner.
