The Tata Group has joined forces with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to set up the Tata IISc Medical School on the IISc Bengaluru campus, with a significant investment of ₹500 crore. This collaboration aims to create a pioneering institution that integrates clinical research, medical education, and global partnerships to address India’s healthcare challenges and opportunities.
A New Frontier in Medical Education and Research
The Tata IISc Medical School will focus on advancing knowledge in critical areas, including oncology, cardiology, neurology, nephrology, diabetes and metabolic disorders, infectious diseases, integrative medicine, and public health. The school will offer integrated MD-PhD and other dual-degree programs designed to train physician-scientists and medical technologists, bridging the gap between medicine, science, and technology.

Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, highlighted the transformative potential of this initiative, stating, “The Tata IISc Medical School will emphasize cutting-edge research and global collaboration, producing a new generation of physician-scientists equipped with modern medical expertise. Their impact will extend across healthcare, providing individuals with better access to quality treatment.”
Global Collaboration and a Vision for India
The institution aims to serve as a center of excellence, promoting a unique model of clinical research and education that can be replicated nationwide. Collaborations with leading international medical schools will enable students to gain global expertise and knowledge, preparing them for impactful careers in healthcare.
IISc Director G. Rangarajan acknowledged the legacy of Jamsetji Tata, the visionary founder of the Tata Group, whose philanthropy laid the foundation for IISc. “We are committed to upholding this legacy by breaking new ground in affordable healthcare solutions for India and beyond,” Rangarajan said. He emphasized that the initiative builds on a century of IISc’s contributions to science and engineering, paving the way for new advancements in medicine.
A Legacy of Excellence
Founded in 1868 by Jamsetji Tata, the Tata Group is a global conglomerate operating in over 100 countries across six continents. Its partnership with IISc aligns with its commitment to addressing India’s healthcare challenges and leveraging technology to transform diagnostics, care, and community health.
Through this collaboration, the Tata IISc Medical School aspires to revolutionize clinical science by integrating basic science, engineering, and medical practice, creating a model that will benefit India and the world.
