In a significant step towards strengthening cancer care services, the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) has inaugurated an advanced Outpatient Department (OPD) laboratory dedicated to the diagnosis and management of head and neck cancers. The new facility is expected to improve early detection, streamline diagnostic procedures and provide comprehensive treatment planning for patients suffering from one of the most common cancers in India.
The state-of-the-art laboratory has been equipped with advanced diagnostic technologies that will enable clinicians to perform specialised investigations required for head and neck cancer cases under one roof. By integrating modern pathology and diagnostic services with clinical consultation, the facility aims to reduce the time taken for diagnosis and facilitate timely initiation of treatment.
According to the institute, the new OPD laboratory will support a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care, bringing together specialists from surgical oncology, pathology, radiology, medical oncology and radiation oncology to formulate personalised treatment plans for patients. This collaborative model is expected to improve treatment outcomes while enhancing patient convenience.
Head and neck cancers account for a significant proportion of cancer cases in India largely due to the widespread use of tobacco in smoked and smokeless forms. Experts emphasise that early diagnosis is critical as patients identified in the initial stages have substantially better survival rates and quality of life after treatment.
The launch of the specialised OPD laboratory reflects SGPGI’s continued efforts to expand its oncology infrastructure and provide advanced, patient-centric cancer care. The institute expects the facility to cater to a growing number of patients from Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states reducing delays in diagnosis and improving access to specialised head and neck cancer services.
