Sanjay Garg takes over as Director General of BIS

Sanjay Garg, a 1994-batch IAS officer from the Kerala cadre, has assumed charge as the Director General of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the country’s National Standards Body, effective November 1, 2025.

With over three decades of wide-ranging administrative experience, Garg has worked across diverse sectors including agriculture, food logistics, defence industry, industrial promotion, finance, and various social sectors at both state and national levels. He is known for his strategic planning and policy implementation expertise.

Before joining BIS, he served as Additional Secretary at the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and as Secretary of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). During his tenure, he led several digital transformation initiatives, notably enhancing research management and administration through IT integration. He also played a key role in expanding the Kisan Sarathi portal, which enables direct communication between farmers and agricultural scientists.

Garg’s career also includes managing World Bank projects in India, advancing deregulation and promotion in the defence manufacturing sector, and supporting industrial development initiatives such as the growth of the leather industry.

In his new role as DG of BIS, Garg will also serve as the President of India’s National Committee in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
