The Municipal Corporation (MC) of Rohtak has detected serious lapses in waste management by a number of hospitals and healthcare centers. Investigations revealed that some facilities were mixing biomedical waste with regular household garbage or discarding it in open spaces an act that poses major risks to public health and the environment.
In response, the MC has started levying monetary penalties and has warned that repeat offenders will face strict legal consequences.
Commissioner Anand Kumar Sharma confirmed that biomedical waste is required to be managed only through licensed agencies or designated collection systems, as laid down in the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules. “Recently, our team caught a private hospital staff member disposing of biomedical waste along with domestic waste. A penalty of ₹20,000 was imposed on the hospital for this violation,” Sharma said.
He further underlined that maintaining hygiene and cleanliness in the city is a collective duty. “We appeal to all residents to support the Municipal Corporation in keeping Rohtak clean and to report any such irregular activities,” Sharma added.
Alongside these enforcement measures, the MC also organized a special cleanliness campaign at Jhajjar Chungi in Ward 20 on Sunday. The drive was led by sanitation officials, with active involvement from Special Officer (Sanitation) Pradeep Kaushik.
