As northern India braces for soaring summer temperatures, the Centre-run RML Hospital in New Delhi has taken proactive measures to combat heat-related illnesses. On May 2, 2025, the hospital announced the reactivation of its specialized heatstroke unit and the launch of a dedicated helpline: 011-23404446. This helpline is intended for individuals who may be found unconscious or suddenly fall ill due to extreme heat, ensuring they receive immediate medical attention. Dr. Ajay Shukla, the hospital’s medical superintendent, emphasized the importance of timely intervention in such cases.
The re-operationalized heatstroke unit is equipped with advanced technology to effectively treat patients suffering from heat-related conditions. Dr. Amlendu Yadav, head of the Emergency Medicine Department at RML Hospital, explained that heatstroke can occur when the body’s temperature exceeds 105°F, leading to a failure in the body’s natural cooling mechanisms, such as sweating. This condition can result in altered mental states or unconsciousness.
Dr. Shukla highlighted the severity of untreated heatstroke, noting that mortality rates can reach up to 80%. However, with prompt and appropriate medical care, the fatality rate can be significantly reduced to 10%. The hospital’s initiative aims to raise public awareness about the dangers of heatstroke and the critical importance of early medical intervention during periods of extreme heat.
