The Centre has agreed to upgrade the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, to the status of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), marking a major step in strengthening healthcare and medical education in Manipur.
The proposal was approved in principle by Union Health Minister JP Nadda during a meeting with Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh in New Delhi.
Alongside the RIMS upgrade, the Centre has also backed Manipur’s proposal to establish a new medical college in Senapati district. The foundation stone for the project is expected to be laid by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his proposed visit to the state in the first week of October.
The two initiatives are expected to increase the state’s capacity for advanced medical treatment, medical education and specialist healthcare, while improving access to healthcare facilities beyond Imphal.
