Kolkata, Dec 16 (PTI): The Kolkata Police on Monday denied permission to the West Bengal Joint Platform of Doctors (WBJDF) to hold a demonstration starting December 17 at Doreena Crossing in central Kolkata. The protest was planned to demand the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) immediately file a supplementary charge sheet in the RG Kar case.

Citing concerns over traffic congestion during the upcoming Christmas and New Year festivities, the police stated in an email to WBJDF:
“Your proposed program cannot be permitted at the designated location due to the high likelihood of traffic disruption and inconvenience to the public, particularly during the festive season.”

The authorities further noted that previous protests by the group had already caused significant disruptions to traffic movement in the city, creating difficulties for commuters.

In response, WBJDF officials announced their decision to approach the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday to seek permission for a peaceful sit-in demonstration at Doreena Crossing. Dr. Rajiv Pandey, a representative of WBJDF, told PTI:
“We will be moving the Calcutta High Court tomorrow to request approval for our protest.”

The WBJDF had earlier organized a march to the CBI office in Salt Lake, demanding progress in the RG Kar case investigation.

Meanwhile, the mother of the deceased doctor expressed her anguish over the delay in justice. She questioned why the CBI has been unable to file a supplementary charge sheet despite months of investigation. The delay resulted in the ex-principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, and a police officer, Abhijit Mondal, securing bail on December 13.

Speaking to a vernacular news channel, the grieving mother said:
“It has been months, and I still don’t know what happened to my daughter on August 9. Despite sharing all the information we had with the CBI, they have not made any progress. I am shocked that the investigation has stalled to this extent.”

The incident occurred on August 9 when the semi-nude body of an on-duty female doctor was discovered in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Initially investigated by the local police, the case was later transferred to the CBI.

The parents of the deceased remain distressed over the delay, pointing out that what the local police achieved in five days, the CBI has yet to complete in over four months.
“We are still searching for answers and justice for our daughter,” the mother said, urging the central agency to act swiftly in the case.
