A building collapse in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area has left six people dead and six others injured, prompting a coordinated rescue and medical response. The incident occurred in the densely populated locality, which houses several student accommodations and hostels.
Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda spoke with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to take stock of the situation. He assured all necessary support from the Union Health Ministry and directed AIIMS and central government hospitals to provide assistance following the incident.
Building collapses can result in serious injuries, including fractures, head injuries, internal bleeding and crush injuries. The six injured people are receiving medical attention, while rescue teams continue searching the debris for anyone who may still be trapped.
Preliminary findings cited by the Delhi Chief Minister suggest that water accumulation in the basement, along with repair work on the ageing structure, may have contributed to the collapse. Following the incident, the Delhi government announced plans for structural audits and safety certifications for buildings used for public activities, including PG accommodations, nursing homes and schools.
The collapse has also raised concerns over the safety of privately operated hostels and PG accommodations in areas housing large numbers of students. Authorities have ordered inspections of nearby buildings and PG accommodations, with action planned against structures found to violate safety norms.
