Several private hospitals in Pune are grappling with a diesel supply crisis after fuel stations reportedly stopped dispensing diesel in cans and other portable containers, threatening the ability of healthcare facilities to maintain uninterrupted power backup during electricity outages.

Hospital administrators said they have been unable to procure diesel for generator sets for the past three days following alleged directives from district authorities restricting fuel sales in containers.

The disruption has triggered serious concerns across the healthcare sector, as diesel generators serve as the primary backup power source for critical hospital services, including ICUs, operation theatres, ventilators, dialysis units and emergency care facilities.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Pune branch, has warned that small and medium-sized hospitals are particularly vulnerable, with many relying heavily on diesel-powered generators to sustain essential medical operations during power cuts.

In a letter to Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi, the IMA highlighted the growing difficulties faced by hospitals and cautioned that any prolonged disruption in diesel availability could directly impact patient care.

“Essential services such as ventilators, dialysis units and operation theatres require continuous power supply. Any interruption can adversely affect patient care,” said Dr Alka Kshirsagar, President, IMA Pune Branch.

Calling the situation critical, Dr Sanjay Patil, Chairman of the IMA Trust Board, said the diesel supply issue has become increasingly acute for healthcare institutions across the city.

Responding to the concerns, District Collector Jitendra Dudi said the administration would examine the matter. “The district administration is monitoring essential commodities, including petroleum products, through the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department. We will review the issue and ensure compliance with state government regulations and directives,” he said.

With hospitals warning of potential risks to life-saving services, the medical community is urging authorities to immediately restore diesel access for healthcare facilities before the situation escalates further.
