Despite the rapid expansion of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), private hospitals across the country continue to show limited participation, raising concerns about access to quality healthcare for beneficiaries. The scheme, launched to provide free health insurance coverage to economically vulnerable sections has seen increased enrolment but uneven provider engagement.

While the number of beneficiaries under AB-PMJAY has grown significantly, the availability of empanelled private hospitals remains inconsistent. In several regions, especially rural and semi-urban areas, patients often depend primarily on government hospitals due to the limited presence of private healthcare providers under the scheme. One of the primary reasons cited by private hospitals for low participation is the relatively low package rates offered under AB-PMJAY. Hospital administrators argue that these rates are often insufficient to cover operational costs, particularly for advanced procedures and high-quality care.

Another major concern raised by private healthcare providers is the delay in claim settlements. Hospitals have reported that reimbursement processes can be slow and complex, leading to cash flow challenges. These delays discourage continued participation and create uncertainty for hospital management.

The limited participation of private hospitals has direct implications for patients. Beneficiaries may face longer waiting times, reduced access to specialized treatments and increased pressure on government healthcare facilities. In some cases, patients are forced to travel long distances to find empanelled hospitals. The government has acknowledged these challenges and is taking steps to address them. Efforts include revising package rates, streamlining claim settlement processes  and encouraging more private hospitals to join the scheme. Authorities have also emphasized strengthening public-private partnerships to improve healthcare delivery under AB-PMJAY.

Healthcare experts suggest that enhancing transparency, ensuring timely payments and making pricing more realistic are key to increasing private sector participation. They argue that without active involvement from private hospitals, the scheme’s goal of universal health coverage may remain difficult to achieve. Although AB-PMJAY has made significant progress in expanding healthcare coverage, the lag in private hospital participation remains a critical challenge. Addressing financial and administrative concerns will be essential to ensure that beneficiaries receive timely and quality healthcare services across the country.
