In a major boost to rural healthcare infrastructure, the Uttar Pradesh government has approved the establishment of 44 new rural health sub-centres across Prayagraj district. The initiative is aimed at strengthening primary healthcare services in villages, improving access to essential medical care and reducing the burden on higher-level health facilities. According to health department officials, the new sub-centres will serve as the first point of contact for rural residents seeking healthcare. They will offer a range of essential services, including outpatient consultations, immunisation, antenatal and postnatal care, maternal and child health services, treatment of common illnesses, basic diagnostic support, distribution of essential medicines and health awareness programmes.

The expansion is expected to significantly improve healthcare accessibility in remote villages by reducing travel time for patients and ensuring timely medical intervention. Officials said the new facilities will also help ease the patient load on Primary Health Centres (PHCs), Community Health Centres (CHCs), and district hospitals, enabling them to focus on more complex cases.

The approval aligns with the Centre’s ongoing efforts under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) which supports the strengthening of sub-health centres and other primary healthcare facilities across the country. The mission aims to enhance public health infrastructure and improve access to quality healthcare services particularly in underserved rural areas.

Health experts believe that strengthening the rural health network is critical for early disease detection, improved maternal and child health outcomes, effective immunisation coverage and better management of communicable and non-communicable diseases. The new sub-centres are also expected to contribute to achieving universal access to primary healthcare and support the state’s broader public health objectives.
