In a landmark move for Pune’s healthcare sector, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to establish the city’s first government-operated PET scan facility. This advanced diagnostic centre, aimed at offering affordable cancer screening and imaging services, will be housed in a dedicated 10,000 sq ft building located at Kala Dalan near Sarasbaug. The project is being developed through a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
PMC officials confirmed that this will be the first-ever PET scan centre initiated by the government across the entire Pune district, where even district hospitals currently lack such equipment. The two-storey facility is being purpose-built for high-end diagnostics and patient isolation, ensuring a safe and specialized environment for screenings.
“This will be Pune’s first government-run PET scan facility and will offer sophisticated tests like PET scans, MRIs, and CT scans at rates affordable for the poor and middle-class citizens,” said Dr. Sanjeev Wavare, PMC’s assistant health officer. “It represents a significant step forward for public healthcare.”
The diagnostic services will be offered at Centre Government Health Scheme (CGHS) rates, making them accessible to a wider population.
Dr. Nina Borade, PMC’s health department head, emphasized that the initiative will give even the most economically disadvantaged patients access to advanced medical diagnostics. “This addresses a longstanding gap in Pune’s public health infrastructure,” she noted.
Health activists and local residents have lauded the development, calling it a long-overdue initiative in a city where advanced diagnostic services have been mostly limited to costly private hospitals.
