Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Johannesburg for the G20 Leaders’ Summit, met Indian-origin tech entrepreneurs and members of the Indian community in South Africa. He encouraged them to further strengthen their engagement with India.

In a social media post, Modi said he had a “fruitful interaction” with tech entrepreneurs of Indian origin and discussed their work in sectors such as fintech, social media, agriculture, education, healthcare, and medical devices. He urged them to continue collaborating closely with India.

Modi also met members of the Indian community associated with various organisations. He stated that they shared their experiences on several issues and expressed appreciation for India’s progress in different areas. He encouraged them to continue contributing to people-to-people ties and to promote aspects of Indian culture, including Yoga and Ayurveda, in South Africa.

According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the Prime Minister underlined the role of the Indian diaspora as a “living bridge” between the two countries and acknowledged the contribution of the more than 1.7 million-strong Indian community in strengthening bilateral ties. Modi also noted their efforts to help youth connect with the legacies of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela.

Modi received a ‘Kalash’ from the Chinmaya Mission, containing Shree Anna (millets) from India and South Africa, which will be placed in the Annapoorna Devi Temple in Durban.

He also interacted with the winners of the Bharat Ko Janiye (Know India) Quiz, stating that the initiative helps members of the diaspora learn more about India’s history and culture.

Separately, Modi met Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to review progress in areas including defence and security, critical minerals, trade, investment, and people-to-people ties. He also held a discussion with the chairman and CEO of Naspers on expanding the company’s investment in India’s digital ecosystem.

Earlier in the day, Modi arrived at Waterkloof Air Force Base in Gauteng, where he was given a ceremonial welcome. This G20 Summit is the first to be held in Africa. The African Union became a member of the G20 during India’s presidency in 2023.
