NMC Issues Guidelines for Live Surgery Broadcasts

Connect with us

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released new guidelines to regulate live surgery broadcasts, emphasizing patient safety, ethical standards and educational value. Surgeons and hospitals are barred from using broadcasts for personal, commercial, or brand promotion. Only medically fit patients with full informed consent can participate-without financial incentives. High-risk cases and incomplete investigations are excluded.

The NMC encourages the use of recorded videos, simulations and cadaver labs over live surgeries to avoid patient risk. During broadcasts, surgeons must not engage in audience interaction, though step-by-step commentary may be allowed. Post-operative care by the operating surgeon for at least 24 hours is mandatory. Recordings must be preserved for two years and used only for educational purposes.
