In a major move to promote homegrown innovations in medical technology and pharmaceuticals, the National Medical Commission (NMC) is set to launch a PhD programme in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

The announcement was made by NMC Chairman Dr Abhijat Sheth during the 3rd convocation ceremony of Bhaikaka University in Karamsad, Anand, on Sunday.

Addressing graduating students, Dr Sheth said the upcoming PhD initiative is part of a broader strategy to strengthen India’s medical research ecosystem and encourage development of innovative healthcare solutions. He further noted that the NMC is actively considering incorporating clinical research as a core component of the medical curriculum. Discussions with ICMR are underway to enhance research facilities and promote research-oriented learning in medical education.

According to recent media inputs, Dr Sheth also revealed that 18,000 new medical seats have been approved nationwide. He added that work is simultaneously progressing to expand faculty strength, ensure uniform standards, and improve the overall quality of medical training.

Emphasising the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), Dr Sheth said NMC’s revised training modules now prioritise self-care, preventive medicine, and professionalism through ATCOM. Reflecting on the lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, he underscored the importance of nurturing a culture of preparedness among healthcare professionals.

A total of 496 students including undergraduates, postgraduates and PhD scholars were awarded degrees at the convocation, while 10 students received gold medals for outstanding academic performance.

The event was attended by BU President Dr Gauri Trivedi, Provost Dr Abhay Dharamsi and other dignitaries. It also included the 20th HM Patel Memorial Lecture, delivered by paediatrician and public health expert Dr Pravitra Mohan on the theme “Equitable Healthcare in India: Leading the Change.”
