The National Medical Commission (NMC) has taken strict action against corruption in medical inspections by blacklisting a senior Assessor and blocking seat renewals and expansions at a private Karnataka medical college for the academic year 2025-26. This action follows the arrest of the Assessor a senior doctor and Head of Anatomy at Murshidabad Medical College by the CBI in May 2025, after he was allegedly caught accepting a ₹10 lakh bribe for giving a favourable inspection report to the college.

As part of the disciplinary measures, the NMC has cancelled the renewal of the college’s existing MBBS and PG seats and rejected any proposals for adding new courses or increasing seat capacity for 2025-26. The Commission emphasized its zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and asserted that further penalties may include monetary fines, suspension of admissions, or reduction of student intake in future academic years.

Clarifying its inspection process, the NMC explained that Assessors are government medical college faculty members assigned randomly and are not directly employed by the Commission.

Separately, the CBI has registered another case in Chhattisgarh against Shri Rawatpura Sarkar Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Nava Raipura. Three doctors and intermediaries were arrested for allegedly accepting bribes to manipulate the inspection process and secure recognition for the college. Investigations in both cases are ongoing.
