NITI Aayog is preparing a significant restructuring plan for AIIMS Delhi aimed at reducing the overwhelming patient burden and enabling doctors to focus more on research activities. Spearheaded by a committee chaired by NITI Aayog member Dr. VK Paul, the proposal suggests expanding outpatient (OPD) services throughout the National Capital Region (NCR) by utilizing available capacity in underused government and private hospitals. This strategy will allow AIIMS Delhi to prioritize critical and trauma care cases and significantly cut down waiting times for urgent treatments.

The committee is developing a comprehensive reform blueprint to align AIIMS with international standards. This includes measures to better manage patient flow, introduce Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to track performance in clinical care, academics, and research, and improve transparency and governance. Financial sustainability and operational self-reliance will also be central themes of the reform strategy.

A robust monitoring system will be proposed to ensure quality standards remain high, even as services expand beyond the main AIIMS campus. The final report will present short-, medium-, and long-term policy actions and is expected to be submitted to the Ministry of Health in the latter half of this year. The ultimate goal is to elevate AIIMS Delhi into a world-class center for medical excellence while driving overall improvements in India’s healthcare landscape.
