The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Mohali, has established a dedicated Department of Medical Devices to strengthen India’s capabilities in medical technology research, development, and innovation. The initiative is aimed at supporting the country’s growing MedTech sector and reducing dependence on imported medical equipment by promoting indigenous design and manufacturing. NIPER Mohali, an Institute of National Importance under the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, has been expanding its research focus beyond pharmaceuticals to include emerging healthcare technologies. The new department will work on the design, development, testing, and regulatory aspects of medical devices, covering areas such as biomaterials, medical imaging, biosensors, artificial intelligence in healthcare, and device validation.

The department is expected to provide advanced laboratory facilities, hands-on training, and industry-oriented research, enabling students and researchers to work on real-world healthcare challenges. The initiative also aims to strengthen industry–academia collaboration, helping translate innovations from laboratories into commercially viable medical products. Such collaboration is considered critical for building a domestic ecosystem for high-value medical technologies.

The move aligns with the Government of India’s broader push under the Promotion of Research and Innovation in Pharma–MedTech (PRIP) scheme, which seeks to transform India into a global hub for pharmaceutical and medical device research. The scheme supports Centres of Excellence, infrastructure development, and funding for projects from early-stage innovation to commercialization.

By establishing a specialized department for medical devices, NIPER Mohali aims to create a skilled workforce, promote innovation-driven growth, and contribute to the development of affordable, high-quality medical technologies for both domestic and global markets. The initiative is expected to play a key role in strengthening India’s self-reliance and competitiveness in the rapidly expanding global MedTech industry.
