Two more nurses were admitted to Beliaghata ID Hospital in Kolkata on 14 Jan (Wednesday) after showing symptoms of Nipah virus infection, a health department official said.
The two nurses had been involved in treating a healthcare worker who had earlier tested positive for Nipah at Burdwan Medical College and Hospital. One of them was brought to the Kolkata hospital late on the night of January 13, while the other, a house staff member, was shifted from the Bardhaman facility early Wednesday.
According to the official, both healthcare workers have symptoms suggestive of Nipah infection. Their samples have been collected and sent for testing.
The two had treated the nurse who was confirmed positive when she was admitted to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital. After developing symptoms, they were moved to Beliaghata ID Hospital for further care.
Meanwhile, the condition of two other nurses who had earlier tested positive for Nipah and are admitted to Barasat Hospital remains extremely critical. Both are in a coma and are being treated in the ICCU.
An RMO at Barasat Hospital who came in contact with the infected nurses has also shown symptoms and has been kept in isolation. However, tests conducted at the VRDL at AIIMS Kalyani, including nasal swab, blood, urine and throat swab, have returned negative results.
Nipah virus is a notifiable disease and must be reported immediately to the central government.
