In a pioneering move that could redefine hospital leadership in India, Narayana Health has announced the launch of the country’s first smart nurse-led hospital in Banashankari, Bengaluru. The paperless, digitally integrated healthcare facility will be managed operationally by nurses marking a significant departure from the conventional doctor- or administrator-led hospital model. The initiative was announced by Dr. Devi Shetty who said the hospital aims to empower nurses with leadership responsibilities while improving patient care through digital technologies. According to him, the facility will be India’s first “truly smart” and paperless hospital designed to enhance patient experience while maintaining affordable healthcare.
Unlike traditional hospitals, the new facility will employ only professionals directly involved in patient care including doctors, nurses and technicians. Administrative functions such as finance, human resources and other back-office operations will be handled through an integrated digital platform allowing nurses to oversee the hospital’s operational management and governance.
As part of the initiative, Narayana Health plans to recruit 25 nurses who aspire to move beyond bedside care into leadership roles. Selected candidates will continue their clinical responsibilities while receiving management training, additional monthly incentives and sponsorship for an Executive Programme in Hospital Administration at Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. Dr. Shetty said the programme is intended to create a structured pathway for nurses to become future hospital CEOs arguing that nurses possess the operational expertise required to lead healthcare institutions but have historically lacked opportunities to assume executive roles.
The announcement has received positive responses from healthcare and industry leaders. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw described the initiative as “truly game changing,” while entrepreneur Nikhil Kamath also welcomed the move on social media. If successful, the Banashankari project could serve as a model for hospitals across India by expanding nurses’ roles beyond clinical care and fostering a new generation of healthcare leaders equipped with both medical and management expertise.
