Narayana Health is planning a significant expansion of its presence in Delhi with around 500 additional hospital beds expected to be added by FY2028-29. The expansion is part of the healthcare major’s broader capacity-building and capital expenditure programme aimed at strengthening its presence in key operating clusters. Ajay Kohli, Delhi NCR Cluster Director at Narayana Health said the company intends to add approximately 500 beds in Delhi over the next two to three years. The planned additions will form part of the company’s overall capex programme through FY29 although the company has not disclosed a separate project-level investment figure specifically for the Delhi expansion.
The company sees Delhi as an important healthcare hub for patients from across North India, including Jammu, Himachal Pradesh and other northern states as well as the Northeast. According to the company, demand is particularly strong for specialised services such as cancer care where treatment capacity remains concentrated in select parts of the country. Narayana Health’s management has pointed to the continuing requirement for additional hospital capacity in Delhi despite the rapid growth of healthcare infrastructure in neighbouring Gurugram and Noida. The company believes Delhi continues to have unmet demand for hospital beds while patients also travel to NCR facilities for specialised treatment.
The Delhi expansion comes against the backdrop of Narayana Health’s wider investment plans. The company has outlined approximately ₹3,000 crore of project capex over the next two to three years with funding expected to come through a combination of internal cash generation and borrowings. The company’s expansion strategy includes greenfield, brownfield and other capacity-enhancement projects across its established markets. Its investor presentation has outlined projects in locations including Bengaluru, Kolkata and Raipur with several projects scheduled for completion between FY27 and FY29.
Focus shifting towards mid-sized hospitals
Narayana Health is also reassessing the size and format of its new hospitals. According to Kohli, the company is moving away from a strategy centred exclusively on very large standalone hospitals and increasingly sees 250–300 beds as an appropriate size for new facilities with the possibility of expanding them subsequently. The rationale is linked to utilisation: the company indicated that hospital occupancy levels are generally around 60–65% making appropriately sized facilities easier to fill and operate efficiently than very large hospitals unless they achieve substantial scale.
Two more North India units also planned
Beyond Delhi, Narayana Health is considering two additional units in North India, although their locations have not yet been finalised. The company’s existing North India network includes facilities in Delhi, Gurugram, Jaipur and Jammu. As of June 30, 2026, the company’s northern cluster had 882 beds according to its investor presentation cited by media reports. At the broader network level, Narayana Health had around 5,955 operating beds as of June 2026 and is targeting more than 7,600 beds by FY29 indicating a substantial increase in capacity over the next few years.
