The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) has appointed women directors to lead three major hospitals and medical institutions in Delhi, in a move aimed at strengthening women’s representation in healthcare administration.
As per the ministry’s order, Dr. Akhilandeshwari Prasad has been appointed director of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences (ABVIMS) and Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital with immediate effect. She earlier served as professor in the Department of Radiodiagnosis at the hospital.
Dr. Himani Ahluwalia has been named director of Lady Hardinge Medical College, where she is currently associated with the Department of Physiology. She is scheduled to assume office on July 1.
In another appointment, Dr. Kavita Rani Sharma has been appointed director of Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital. She had been serving as acting director and was previously director-professor in the Department of Anaesthesia.
The appointments come after the terms of the previous directors ended a few months ago. The move is being viewed as a strong message from the Centre in support of women’s empowerment and leadership in the country’s top healthcare institutions.
