Leading private healthcare provider Medanta has announced plans to establish a 400-bed multi-specialty hospital in Varanasi, marking a significant expansion of its presence in Uttar Pradesh. The project involving an investment of approximately ₹550 crore, aims to strengthen access to advanced healthcare services in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The decision was approved by the board of Global Health Limited, which operates Medanta hospitals. The facility will be developed under a build-to-suit and lease arrangement in partnership with Shripal Hospitality and other stakeholders. While the partner will handle the civil infrastructure, Medanta will invest in interiors, medical equipment and fit-outs.

The upcoming Varanasi facility will complement Medanta’s existing network in the state, including its 950-bed hospital in Lucknow and the recently operational 550-bed hospital in Noida. With the addition of the new hospital, Medanta’s total bed capacity in Uttar Pradesh is expected to reach around 1,900 beds, reinforcing its position as a major private healthcare provider in the region.

Industry experts and company officials have highlighted that Varanasi remains an underserved market for high-quality tertiary healthcare. Most existing hospitals in the city have relatively small capacities, forcing patients to travel to other cities for advanced treatment. The new multi-specialty hospital is expected to cater to millions of people in Varanasi and nearby regions, improving access to specialized care.

The proposed facility will offer comprehensive multi-specialty services supported by advanced technology and experienced medical professionals. According to Chairman and Managing Director Naresh Trehan, the expansion reflects Medanta’s commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centric healthcare in densely populated regions. The Varanasi project is part of Medanta’s broader expansion strategy across India, focusing on increasing its footprint in high-demand regions. The move is expected to enhance healthcare infrastructure in eastern Uttar Pradesh while reducing the burden on existing facilities in larger cities.
