A massive cloudburst hit Chashoti in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district on Thursday (Aug 14), triggering flash floods that swept away a langar set up for devotees on the Machail Mata Yatra route. Officials confirmed at least 40 bodies recovered so far, with the toll likely to rise as over 220 people remain missing.

Two NDRF teams have been deployed, and rescue work is underway. Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Sharma said the flash flood struck at the yatra’s starting point, catching authorities by surprise. The Meteorological Centre Srinagar has warned of more moderate to heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds in the coming hours.

Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh said he is in constant touch with the district administration and assured all possible aid, including heli-rescue for the injured. J&K LG’s office has instructed NDRF, SDRF, police, army, and civil officials to intensify relief efforts.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and assured close monitoring of the situation. J&K CM Omar Abdullah has cancelled the “At Home” tea party and cultural events planned for Independence Day morning, while formal ceremonies will proceed as scheduled.
