On May 9, 2025, Maharashtra’s Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) issued and swiftly withdrew a circular that had directed all government medical and dental colleges in the state to halt the approval of leave for doctors and staff. The circular, signed by DMER Director Dr. Ajay Chandanwale, cited “prevailing war-like conditions” and emphasized the need for preparedness should medical personnel be required for national duty, particularly those affiliated with the Territorial Army or reserve forces.
The directive stated: “It cannot be ruled out that emergency situations may arise requiring the involvement of medical professionals. Hence, no leaves should be sanctioned for officers and employees working in medical education institutions until further orders.”
However, within an hour of its issuance, the circular was withdrawn without an official explanation. Dr. Chandanwale confirmed the rollback but did not provide a reason. Sources suggest that the decision may have been reconsidered due to the sensitive nature of the subject or after review by higher authorities.
As of now, there is no formal statement on whether a revised advisory will be issued.
