Madhya Pradesh is using the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to expand medical education and healthcare infrastructure, with new medical colleges planned in four districts, Union Health Minister JP Nadda said during a review meeting with Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.
The medical colleges in Dhar, Panna, Katni and Betul are targeted for establishment by December 2027. The initiative is aimed at increasing the availability of medical education and specialised healthcare services across the state.
MBBS, super-speciality seats increase
Madhya Pradesh added 520 MBBS seats in 2026, taking the total from 5,600 to 6,120 seats. Super-speciality capacity has also expanded, with seats in government medical colleges increasing from 63 to 73, while private medical colleges increased their intake from 29 to 53 seats.
The state is also strengthening its government medical college network. Construction of medical college buildings in Chhatarpur, Damoh and Budhni has been completed, while the Ujjain medical college is expected to be completed in 2027. Medical colleges have also been proposed in Rajgarh and Mandla under the Centre’s Phase-III scheme.
Specialised care expanded
The review highlighted the expansion of specialised services across the state. Madhya Pradesh currently has 70 haemodialysis units across 52 districts and 52 cancer day-care centres. CAR-T cell therapy has also been introduced at Government Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College, Indore.
Maternal and child health indicators improve
Health indicators presented during the meeting showed improvements in maternal and child health. According to SRS 2022-24, the state’s Maternal Mortality Ratio declined by seven points to 135 per lakh live births.
As per NFHS-6, the share of pregnant women receiving at least four antenatal care visits increased from 57.5% to 69.5%. The Neonatal Mortality Rate declined from 27 to 26, while the Infant Mortality Rate fell from 37 to 35 per 1,000 live births.
The meeting reviewed healthcare infrastructure, medical education, specialised services and public health programmes, with emphasis on continued Centre-State coordination to expand access to healthcare across Madhya Pradesh.
