Madhya Pradesh Budget 2026-27 Prioritises Health with Rs 23,747 Crore Outlay

Healthcare emerged as a key focus area in the Madhya Pradesh Budget 2026-27, with Finance Minister Jagdish Devda earmarking Rs 23,747 crore for the sector. Presenting the Budget in the Assembly, he underscored the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and ensuring quality treatment for all citizens.

The state currently operates 55 district hospitals, 158 civil hospitals, 348 community health centres, 1,442 primary health centres and 256 sub-health centres, together offering around 48,000 beds. New district hospitals are being set up in Maihar, Mauganj and Pandhurna. Additionally, 228 maternity waiting rooms have been established to support high-risk pregnancies.

Medical education has seen significant growth, with five new government medical colleges launched over the past two years. MBBS seats have increased from 2,275 to 2,850, while postgraduate seats have risen sharply from 262 to 1,468. Medical colleges in Indore, Rewa, Seoni, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Sagar and Gwalior have also been upgraded to enhance services.

The government is also moving ahead with public-private partnership (PPP) models to establish new medical colleges. Agreements have been signed in Dhar, Baijnath and Panna, and plans are underway for nine additional districts. Recruitment drives are in progress to fill 3,850 doctor posts and 1,256 nursing officer positions.

Under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, over 4.46 crore health cards have been issued, including 15.48 lakh special cards for senior citizens above 70 years. The programme is linked to 1,118 government and 720 private hospitals, with a budget provision of Rs 2,139 crore for 2026-27.

The Budget also promotes traditional systems of medicine, with eight new Ayurvedic colleges proposed across the state.
