Global private equity firm LeapFrog Investments is planning to invest $80 million to $100 million in India’s healthcare sector over the next two years, driven by rising demand for quality medical services, expanding insurance coverage and growing spending on diagnostics and preventive care.
India’s Healthcare Market Poised for Strong Growth
India’s healthcare sector was valued at around $180 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach $320 billion by 2028, according to government data. Rising chronic diseases, greater insurance penetration and increasing disposable incomes are supporting the sector’s expansion.
Hospitals and Specialised Care in Focus
LeapFrog is evaluating opportunities across hospitals and specialty healthcare providers, particularly those catering to patients beyond India’s major cities. The firm is also looking at providers specialising in maternal and child health, ophthalmology and oncology.
Biju Mohandas, Global Head and Partner for Healthcare at LeapFrog, said the firm’s investment strategy is centred on growing insurance penetration and consumers’ increasing ability to afford quality healthcare.
Asset-Light Healthcare Model Under Evaluation
The firm is currently evaluating an investment in an asset-light, single-specialty healthcare provider, although it has not disclosed further details.
Healthcare Deals Cross $30 Billion
India’s healthcare and pharmaceutical sector recorded 594 M&A and private equity transactions worth more than $30 billion between 2022 and 2024, according to Grant Thornton Bharat and the Association of Healthcare Providers India.
Recent major transactions include KKR’s proposed acquisition of Medicover Hospital’s India business for €1.2 billion ($1.4 billion).
Existing Investments and New Opportunities
LeapFrog’s existing Indian portfolio includes Redcliffe Labs, a diagnostics provider, and Healthify, a digital health platform. Beyond healthcare services, the firm is also exploring opportunities in pharmaceuticals and medical equipment.
Over $1 Billion Capital Deployment Across Asia and Africa
LeapFrog is investing from an $808 million fund and related co-investment vehicles, giving it more than $1 billion in capital to deploy across Asia and Africa.
With a significant portion of the capital already deployed in markets including the Philippines and Vietnam, the firm sees substantial investment opportunities in India over the next two years.
