Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute has earned the Joint Commission International (JCI) Certificate of Distinction for its Healthcare Sustainability Program making it the first hospital in India and only the fifth worldwide to achieve this honour. The certification, granted in collaboration with the International Hospital Federation’s Geneva Sustainability Centre, recognises the Mumbai hospital for meeting rigorous global ESG standards.

Healthcare is among the world’s top five carbon-emitting sectors, and this distinction highlights efforts to reduce climate-related risks. The evaluation covers environmental governance at the board level, as well as integration of emissions control, waste and water management, and sustainable supply-chain practices into overall risk management.

Dr. Santosh Shetty, CEO and Executive Director of Kokilaben Hospital, said the recognition reinforces the hospital’s 2030 Sustainability Roadmap, which focuses on energy-saving initiatives, water conservation, low-emission materials, and climate-resilient infrastructure. “These efforts improve patient safety, cut long-term costs, and strengthen our ability to withstand climate challenges,” he noted.

The milestone comes amid rising climate pressures on India’s healthcare systems and increasing national expectations around emissions tracking and disaster preparedness under programmes such as NPCCHH. Kokilaben Hospital’s achievement sets a new benchmark for climate-aligned, ESG-forward healthcare infrastructure in the country.
