Kerala is moving ahead with its ambitious ‘Genome City Kerala’ initiative, with an official announcement expected in early 2026. Inspired by Hyderabad’s Genome Valley, the project aims to establish a major integrated life-sciences hub. The development will begin at the Bio360 Life Science Park in Thonnakkal, located in the state capital.

Scope of the Genome City Project

The proposed Genome City will cover 60 acres and involve an investment of roughly ₹3,500 crore. The hub is designed to accommodate pharmaceutical manufacturers, biotech firms, medical device companies, and advanced research institutions. The project is projected to generate about 15,000 jobs and draw substantial multinational investment.

According to the CEO of the Life Science Park, planning is at an advanced stage, and the initiative is expected to transform Thiruvananthapuram and boost Kerala’s life-sciences ecosystem. Over time, the project’s scale may surpass current projections. The location also offers strong logistical advantages, with close access to the international airport and the Vizhinjam seaport, aiding the movement of medical equipment. A senior state official added that the project will strengthen Kerala’s position as a biomanufacturing centre. Once approved, land allotment and regulatory processes will be fast-tracked through a single-window system.

Parallel Development: MedSpark Medical Devices Hub

Alongside the Genome City, the MedSpark medical devices hub is nearing completion at the Bio360 Life Science Park. MedSpark is Kerala’s first dedicated facility for medical-device innovation and production. Construction of its three main structures is progressing well, with structural work expected to finish by January 2026. A small-animal testing facility is scheduled to become operational by February 2026.

The project, jointly developed by KSIDC and SCTIMST, has a total cost of ₹256 crore ₹156 crore funded by the state government and ₹100 crore by the Centre. The Bio360 campus already hosts 22 companies with investments close to ₹700 crore, a figure likely to exceed ₹1,000 crore soon. However, the arrival of the Genome City project marks a substantial expansion of the region’s industrial and research capacity.

Incentives and Institutional Support

To attract investors, the state plans to roll out several incentives within the Life Science Park. These include 60-year subsidized land leases, capital subsidies for equipment, expedited single-window approvals within 30 days, and power tariff concessions. A dedicated advisory committee will also help fast-track clearances and offer institutional support.

The streamlined process is expected to make it easier for companies to set up operations. Professionals looking to work in clinical, regulatory, or technological roles in these emerging biotech and pharmaceutical enterprises may consider advanced training, such as courses in safe prescribing, clinical drug development, or specialized medical technology programs.
