The Kerala government has announced a dedicated initiative to strengthen women’s healthcare by establishing specialised menopause clinics across district hospitals in the state. The announcement was made by Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal while presenting the state budget in the Assembly.
Menopause, a natural phase in a woman’s life, often remains under-addressed despite its significant physical and emotional impact. Many women experience hormonal imbalances, sleep disturbances, mental stress and bone-related health issues during this phase, highlighting the need for focused medical support.
The proposed clinics will offer comprehensive services under one roof, including medical consultations, mental health counselling, screening for heart, bone and hormonal health, along with access to medicines and lifestyle guidance.
With this move, Kerala joins Maharashtra, which became the first state in India to launch dedicated menopause clinics in government hospitals and urban health facilities. Maharashtra rolled out the initiative on Makar Sankranti (January 14) earlier this year.
