Kenvue has released a new evidence report focusing on the role of fluids, electrolytes, and energy (FEE) in managing non-diarrheal illnesses, such as fevers, respiratory infections, viral illnesses, heat exhaustion, and general weakness.
Physicians’ Approach to Dehydration in Non-Diarrheal Illnesses
The treatment of dehydration caused by diarrheal diseases is well-established, but dehydration in non-diarrheal illnesses has largely been overlooked. According to the expert panel, only 3 out of 10 physicians recommend FEE solutions for patients with non-diarrheal illnesses, delaying recovery. A recent Indian expert panel, based on Delphi consensus recommendations, emphasized the importance of using oral FEE to manage dehydration in both acute and chronic non-diarrheal conditions. Despite the benefits, there is a significant gap in knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) when it comes to FEE solutions.
A survey found that healthcare practitioners’ knowledge of non-diarrheal dehydration and its management was moderate. Despite the benefits, taste, and convenience of FEE drinks, they are still rarely recommended for treatment.
Pediatricians’ Insights on Non-Diarrheal Dehydration
In a similar KAP study conducted with pediatricians, most agreed that FEE management is important for treating dehydration in acute non-diarrheal illnesses. They emphasized the need to identify dehydration symptoms in children, such as abnormal skin turgor, dryness of the tongue and eyes, capillary refill time, urine frequency, and tachycardia, as reliable indicators of dehydration.
Ready-to-Drink (RTD) FEE Formulations for Faster Recovery
The report stresses that ready-to-drink FEE solutions are more effective for dehydration recovery than plain water, coconut water, or ORS powders. Oral formulations with the right balance of fluids, electrolytes, and energy are essential for quick recovery from non-diarrheal illnesses. According to the report, 87% of physicians agreed that FEE solutions can help speed up recovery, and 98% of prescribers said that ready-to-drink FEE solutions are more effective than non-RTD alternatives. Many doctors noted that patients recover faster when given written prescriptions for FEE solutions, rather than verbal advice. A clinical study showed that using a ready-to-drink electrolyte drink can improve hydration and energy levels in patients in as little as 20 minutes to 24 hours.
Physician Opinions on FEE Solutions
Based on clinical studies, over 80% of physicians agreed that ready-to-drink electrolyte solutions are well-tolerated and clinically proven to improve hydration and energy in patients with non-diarrheal illnesses like fever and general weakness. Dr. N. L. Sridhar, a pediatrician, noted that nearly 45% of pediatricians consider fluid and electrolyte deficits to be caused by a combination of factors like vomiting, sweat, and insufficient fluid intake, and recommended oral FEE solutions from the start of a non-diarrheal illness.
Addressing the Hydration Gap
Dr. B. Ravinder Reddy, a senior gastrointestinal surgeon, pointed out that while the role of fluid and electrolytes in treating diarrhea is well recognized, it is often overlooked in acute non-diarrheal illnesses. Dehydration in non-diarrheal illnesses is difficult to diagnose, as symptoms can vary, but increasing evidence highlights the importance of FEE solutions for faster recovery.
Kenvue’s Commitment to Advancing FEE Science
Nagarajan Ramasubramaniam, Senior R&D Director at Kenvue, stated that the company has been working with experts to advance the science of oral FEE in India. The launch of the report “The Hydration Gap for Non-Diarrheal Illnesses” is a significant step in standardizing guidelines for oral FEE restoration in both adults and children. Kenvue is committed to working with healthcare professionals (HCPs) to enhance scientific literature and educate them on this important therapy area. The company continues to innovate its hydration and electrolyte drink portfolio under ORSL to better serve the needs of HCPs and consumers.
In 2023, Kenvue collaborated with the Association of Physicians of India (API) to launch the “Hydration and Recovery Masterclass.” This certification program is designed to educate healthcare practitioners about the role of FEE management in supporting recovery from various non-diarrheal illnesses.
