India has stepped up its humanitarian response to the devastating floods and landslides in Nepal, with 10 tonnes of relief supplies and essential medicines reaching Kathmandu.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said India’s Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) and medical assistance had arrived in Kathmandu, with additional support being mobilised. The assistance is aimed at strengthening Nepal’s ongoing rescue and relief operations.
The move followed a conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah, during which Modi expressed condolences over the loss of lives and assured Nepal of India’s full support. Indian teams are also coordinating with authorities on rescue and relief efforts.
The floods and landslides along the Nepal-China border have caused widespread destruction, claiming at least 160 lives and leaving hundreds missing. Several settlements have been affected, while bridges and hydropower infrastructure have also suffered major damage.
International support is also growing. The United States and European Union have expressed solidarity with Nepal and said they are prepared to provide humanitarian assistance. Germany and other countries have similarly offered support, while the UK and Canada are assisting their nationals and citizens affected by the disaster.
With India’s relief supplies now on the ground and international assistance being mobilised, efforts are intensifying to rescue survivors and provide urgent medical and humanitarian aid to communities affected by the disaster.
