Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has expressed concern over the high costs of organ transplant procedures in private hospitals and said the state is moving ahead with plans to establish a government-run facility to improve affordability. He was speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Kerala Institute of Organ and Tissue Transplant (KIOTT) at Chevayoor.
According to the Chief Minister, the proposed institute is intended to make organ transplant surgeries more accessible and affordable for patients. State Health Minister Veena George described the project as a significant step toward expanding access to advanced medical treatments for the public.
The KIOTT is planned on a 20-acre campus and will include 350 beds, operation theatres and dedicated research divisions. Supported by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board, the institute is expected to provide specialised transplant services within the public healthcare system.
